The scheme, which is already in place in some parts of the country, will request that local communities top up a €10.6 million government payment for the upkeep of roads in their area.
Speaking this afternoon, Minister of State Alan Kelly said in pilot scheme locals have contributed up to 50% to this.
He said the money has been sourced from local businesses and chambers of commerce, and in some cases direct labour to maintain the roads was supplied.
Newstalk Lunchtime's Jonathan Healy spoke to the Tipperary TD earlier today, who explained that this move is due to the need to prioritise busier roads and people need to be realistic.
