As Budget 2013 approaches speculation is increasing over possible cuts proposed to child benefit.
It follows reports that an advisory group has recommended that the payment be cut by €40 per month per child bringing the payment received to €100.
The Agriculture Minister says the government needs to consider if it is fair for high income earners to get the same child benefit as lower income families.
Simon Coveney said the matter has yet to be discussed by the Cabinet.
But he believes child benefit should go to families who need it the most.
“Is it fair that very high income earners are getting the same support through child benefit that people who are on low incomes are getting?” he said.
“At a time when you have to try and prioritise spending for families and parents and children who need financial support the most – then I think it’s something we need to consider” he added.
What do you think? Should there be different child benefit rates for higher earners?

What about all the children’s allowance sent out to other countries shouldn’t this be paid at the rate of that country at the v least pref to stop if at all possible how did we get ourselves into this ridiculous situation?
/> No wage increase in 5years, social tax, house tax, huge price increase in petrol now a reduction in child benefit. Where is the incentive to work?????
/> Why not reduce child benefit to parents of obese kids? Processed and hi fat/ hi sugar foods cost more than fresh food. If parents can afford the extra cost of these foods then why should the state fund that extra cost of unhealthy foods through child benefit? and then also pay for the increased healthcare costs for obese kids?
Child benefit cuts is the line in the sand, we’re supposed to protect unsecured bond holders, but not Irish kids?????
/> Child welfare is much too high. E100/month is about right. Social welfare from cradle to the grave must also go. In America you get welfare for 5 years only
