The Minister for Sport Shane Ross has said he is "fighting fit" after a fall at Dublin's Marlay Park today.

He broke two fingers and dislocated another, with images posted on his Twitter account showing his left hand heavily bandaged.

Mr Ross was volunteering as a marshal for the local 5km park run when the accident happened, The Irish Times reported.

He was treated at Tallaght Hospital and then returned to canvassing in Churchtown this afternoon.

Mr Ross is hoping to be returned as an Independent TD in the Dublin Rathdown constituency in next month's General Election.

He said on social media that while marshalling this morning's park run "proved more eventful than usual", "the show must go on".

He thanked his team for continuing their canvass in his absence and the treatment he received at Tallaght Hospital from the "wonderful" medical staff.

Mr Ross faces strong competition in his three-seat constituency in the upcoming election.

Among the candidates are the Culture Minister and Fine Gael TD Josepha Madigan, the deputy leader of the Green Party Catherine Martin, and Fine Gael Senator Neale Richmond.
