There has been a significant drop in the number of people who have died in house fires this year.
New figures have been released by the Irish Chief Fire Officers Association.
They reveal 17 lives were lost in fires in the first 9 months of this year.
This is compared to 30 during the same period last year.
The deaths occurred in Dublin and Roscommon (3), Meath and Cork (2), Waterford, Mayo, Offaly, Monaghan, Donegal, Kerry and Kilkenny (1).
People are being reminded to make sure their smoke alarms are working correctly and to have an escape route planned with your family.
The figures are being released to coincide with the launch of Fire Safety Week for 2012.
The theme of the all-island initiative this year is “Protecting People Most at Risk From Fire”.
A series of local prevention activities to heighten fire safety awareness will take place around Ireland over the next week as part of the 11th annual Fire Safety Week.
It is jointly hosted by the National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.
