As energy costs remain “astronomical”, a service-switching expert has urged people to make “simple” changes to reduce their bills in winter.
While Bord Gáis Energy and several over providers are due to cut their electricity and gas bills in the coming months, energy prices remain high for consumers.
Irish people are paying 80% more than the European Union average for electricity, even though wholesale prices are falling.
There are several energy companies in Ireland so you can find the best value deal, but you can also find ways to reduce your total bill.
Price comparison expert Switcher.ie has urged people to make “smart, simple changes can prevent heat loss and save you money on your bills”.
Switcher.ie has released tips to keep your house warm and your bills lower:
- Turning down your thermostat by one degree can cut annual energy costs by 10%
- Get a smart thermostat or radiator booster to have more control over energy use
- Reduce use of ovens, driers, and immersions, which cost up to €2.60 an hour
- Prevent draughts using a blocker at the bottom of doors and a chimney balloon in your fireplace
- Bleed your radiator regularly to ensure it works properly
- Keep clothes and over heavy materials off the radiator
- Use a lagging jacket on your water tank to keep water hotter for longer and insulate your walls and attic to save up to €600 annually
- Get your boiler serviced by a registered gas installer to prevent unwanted breakdowns during the colder winter months
- Use the eco-setting on your washing machine to save 30% on energy usage
- “Cook clever” by using the microwave or airfryer to reduce energy usage
- Turn off appliances at the wall when you're not using them, as they consume electricity when left on stand-by
Energy Expert Eoin Clarke said cutting costs is especially important for households already struggling with the cost-of-living.
“With energy bills still at astronomical levels, many households face another challenging winter, so it’s important they cut corners wherever they can,” he said.
“Simple, affordable changes around the home can conserve energy, save money, and reduce your carbon footprint."
"Get the whole family on board; remind your kids to turn off devices, switch off lights and wear another layer if they're chilly.”
