What are simple yet thoughtful things you can cook for your mother on Mother’s Day?
On The Hard Shoulder, TV chef Aisling Larkin said, in her view, Mother’s Day is all “about the little small gestures” and that many mothers will not be expecting anything too fancy.
“Make them a cup of tea,” she said.
“Make them a lovely breakfast, cook them a lovely meal; do something really nice.
“I cook all of the time for everybody else.
“If anybody cooks for me, or even gives me a cup of coffee, I am so grateful because I do it for everybody else.”
Importantly, Ms Larkin said there should not be “any hint of washing up left” after the meal.
“Mum doesn’t want a lovely meal to have to be left with the washing up,” she added.
What to cook
For breakfast, Ms Larkin suggested people cook their mother scrambled eggs in the microwave.
“Crack your eggs first,” she said.
“I just do butter; real Irish, salted butter and there’s three eggs there.
“Do it in intervals of 30-seconds; so, don’t put it in for a full minute and a half or two minutes.
“Because you’re going to potentially overcook it.”

For dinner, Ms Larkin said she had brought in a “really simple” dish.
“We have parmesan crushed roasted potatoes,” she said.
“We’ve got salmon with goats cheese and pesto wrapped in streaky bacon and we’ve got a few green beans on the side.”
Ideally for those who are not expert cookers, she advised it can be cooked on a single tray in the oven.
But if cooking really isn’t your thing, or your mother does not care about food, Ms Larkin said there are plenty of other thought things you can do for her.
“What do they love?” she said.
“Do they love words and cards? Maybe write them a poem, write them a card.”
