The Sinn Fein leader, Gerry Adams, has reiterated that the party fully supports John Downey.
A homecoming celebration due to be held in Donegal this evening, was cancelled after Mr Downey said he wouldn't allow it become a "media circus."
The Hyde Park bombing suspect's trial collapsed this week, after it emerged he'd been given assurances he was immune from prosecution.
Up to five-hundred people had been due to attend the event in Kilmacrenan later.
The Sinn Fein leader says supporters of John Downey would of been entitled to celebrate his homecoming, but Gerry Adams also commended him for choosing to cancel it.
