The Dáil disciplinary committee says Mary Lou McDonald abused her parliamentary privilege in remarks about alleged tax evasion.

The Committee on Procedures and Privileges says the Sinn Féin deputy leader should not have named six former politicians - who were alleged to have offshore bank accounts.

Deputy McDonald named the former politicians last December when discussing the allegations of a civil service whistleblower investigating tax evasion by account holders at Ansbacher Bank.

Newstalk understands that Deputy McDonald is out of the country and will deal with the issue upon her return at the weekend.

Fianna Fáil TD for Kildare South, Seán Ó Fearghail, initially made complaints about her comments to The Dail's oversight Committee on Procedures and Privileges.

He spoke with Lunchtime today about the issue, stating: "We are expected to act responsibly and use that privilege responsibly. Deputy McDonald is a member of the Public Accounts Committe and that was the proper forum to engage on this particular matter.

"Despite that advice she proceeded to raise that matter in the Dail. The substance had been investigated by the Dail procedures previously.

"Quite clearly what was afoot here was Sinn Fein engaging in a politcal stunt."
