Sinn Féin has published proposals to take authority over the gardaí away from politicians.

Their submission for the new Garda Authority calls for the establishment of an independent body that would have oversight of the force, and the confidential recipient.

The 20 members of the authority would be drawn from different sectors of society.

But the party still allows for politicians to be represented on the new authority, as justice spokesman Padraig MacLochlainn explains:

Under Sinn Féin's plan, the Garda Confidential Recipient would remain in place for some complaints, but the most serious would go straight to the Ombudsman.

Justice spokesman Padraig MacLochlainn says reforms over the past ten years haven't gone far enough, "You had the Morris Tribunal, all of the findings from that. We were promised a new beginning of policing, people were shocked at the revelations that emerged, that was to be the Garda Síochána Act 2005 ...what we have learned from all the recent scandals is that it (the Act) just isn't far enough. We need a new beginnning, we need to restore public confidence in the administration of justice."
