Skellig Michael will re-open to visitors today following recent works to repair rockfall damage on the main visitor access route.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site off the Kerry coast has recently gained global fame after appearing in the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' film.

The Office of Public Works says that the island will remain open until October 2nd, assuming there are no further incidents.

Boats to Skellig Michael depart daily from the Portmagee marina in Co. Kerry at 10am.

The trip takes 45 minutes and allows visitors 2 to 2.5 hours on the rock before returning to the mainland by 3pm.

Booking in advance is advisable and the public can find out more information about visiting the site on the website: skelligislands.com
