Two skydivers in the UK almost collided mid-air with a pair of US fighter jets, according to a report.

Details of the incident in April have been revealed in the report from the UK's Airprox Board, which looks into possible mid-air near misses.

The report explains that the skydivers were free-falling at speeds of around 190km/h above the Chatteris airfield in Cambridge when the F15 jets passed underneath them.

Footage of the incident was captured on the helmet camera of one of the skydivers.

The report explains: "Once the parachutists had seen the F15s there was very little they could do to avoid the situation, having no control over their speed or direction whilst in free-fall."

The board couldn't establish the exact distance between the skydivers and the jets due to a "lack of information".

Meanwhile, the report states it was "unfortunate" that the pilots had not received any warnings from air traffic control that the parachute site was active.

This was because the jets had been handed over from air traffic controllers at one site to another "at a busy time".

It suggests the pilots should either have questioned air traffic control on whether it was active before overflying it, or "avoided it anyway until they could determine its status".

The report notes: "As they overflew the drop site, it was unlikely that the pilots would have been able to see the parachutists and take avoiding action, and in this case they were unaware that they had flown beneath them."

The risk was ultimately assessed by the board as Category B, meaning "safety had been reduced much below the norm".
