This is despite a very small decrease in the number of people on the Live Register.

On a seasonally adjusted basis the Live Register fell by 1,000 in October bringing that total to 434,200.

In unadjusted terms there were 420,172 people signing on the Live Register in October which represents an annual decrease of 10,260 or 2.4%.

Long-term increase

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) says the trend in the overall Live Register “continues to be one of movement within a small range.

It adds that the number of people under-25 who are on the dole has fallen by 10% in the year to October.

Other findings from the latest figures include:

  • The number of long term claimants in October was 188,117 – an increase of 2,657 in the year to October
  • The comparable increase for females was 5,687 – giving an overall annual increase of 8,344 in long-term claimants

While many of those young people have emigrated Chief Economist with KBC Bank Austin Hughes says it is down to job creation too.
