The number of deaths caused by smoking in the home could be as high as road deaths - according to new research led by NUI Galway.

The Europe-funded study shows that the concentration of pollution in the homes of indoor smokers is six times higher than the World Health Organisation's recommendation for general outdoor air quality.

Children who live in such homes are seen as particularly vulnerable - with 40% of Irish children being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Advances in house building means homes are much more airtight now than 30 years ago - meaning smoke is less likely to seep out of homes.

The report's authors are calling for an education campaign to find ways to encourage smokers not to smoke indoors.
