The young girl who tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony in Mallorca has been named locally as Clodagh Phelan.
It happened early this morning in Alcudia while her family were sleeping.
Parnell Athletics Club in County Wicklow wrote earlier today that they were “truly heartbroken” to hear of Clodagh’s passing, "one of our juvenile athletes and friend to many of our younger athletes".
“Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics,” they wrote.
“Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”
Aughrim GAA Club and Glengealy GAA Club both also extended their “sincere condolences” to her family following her passing.
Taoiseach Simon Harris also expressed his sympathy to Clodagh’s family following her tragic death.
“So sad to hear of the tragic loss of Clodagh Phelan,” he wrote.
“So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident.
“Thoughts with her family and community at this truly awful time.”
In a statement to Newstalk Spain's Guardia Civil said the case is under investigation.
Police received an emergency call after the 12-year-old girl fell from a hotel balcony.
Another person staying at the hotel called the emergency services when they found her body.
Attempts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
