The Taoiseach has called for a national debate on pornography - saying some young minds are being "tainted and even corrupted" by it.

He made the comments at the launch of a new helpline for the victims of crime this afternoon.

In a discussion on sexual assault he said online pornography is as "ubiquitous as it is damaging" and expressed a worry about the influence of porn on younger people.

He said young Irish people are growing up, "imagining that what they see might be normal sexual behaviour."

He said it was time for a national conversation around the issue, and said it would form part of the government's agenda for a more caring country.

"There is clearly an issue there that needs to be addressed," he argued. "[It's] very hard to address it given the range and ferocity of avalanche of communications of all descriptions that are coming at young people now.

"Young minds are being in some cases corrupted and tainted by an avalanche of this kind of material," he added.

Mr Kenny's comments come after former Baywatch star and playmate Pamela Anderson delivered a speech to the the Oxford Union in the UK on the dangers of modern pornography.

Ms Anderson is encouraging people to swear off pornography and said she is "afraid that the world might forget how to make love."
