There is speculation about the future of the VHI after the government was ordered to end its unlimited guarantee for the insurer yesterday.

The European Commission has said the guarantee which ensures that the VHI cannot be wound up or go into liquidation gives it an unfair advantage in the market.

VHI will now need to meet the same reserve levels as all other insurers.

This means it could need a cash injected of up to €300 million.

General Manager of Cornmarket Financial Services is Dermot Goode.

He says the government has already said it does not want to sell VHI but the ruling may change things.

He spoke with Breakfast here on Newstalk.
