The Rape Crisis Network is reporting a spike in calls to their service after a rapist in his 70s was freed on bail this week having been convicted of abusing his daughter.

72-year-old Patrick O'Brien of Old Court Avenue, Bray in Co. Wicklow was jailed for 12 years but 9 were suspended after admitting raping his daughter Fiona Doyle in the 70s and 80s.

Fianna Fail yesterday called for the introduction of a sentencing council similar to the one in operation in Britain.

Justice Spokesperson Niall Collins said a sentencing council made up of Judges and lay people could lead to more consistency.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny meanwhile says he is willing to meet with Fiona Doyle.

It follows reports today the 46-year-old wants to meet Mr. Kenny in the wake of the sentencing of her father.

He has told the Dáil he will meet her if that is what she wishes.

"I would be quite willing to meet Mrs. Doyle, and to hear her view as a victim of unspeakable horror, as to a perspective on how a victim would see the court system working" he said.

"I can't of course comment upon the judge in question or upon the sentence issued".

"But I'm very happy to meet with Mrs. Doyle at a convenient time" he added.

'No cosideration for her'

The court decision has caused outrage.

Sisters Joyce, June and Paula Kavanagh are abuse survivors from Dublin who have set up the Healing Through Hope and Humour website.

They say they feel massive sympathy for the victim Fiona Doyle who suffered at the hands of the system.

They spoke to Breakfast here on Newstalk.
