Staff at Dublin's Phoenix Park have marked out new signs to help people keep their distance during the coronavirus pandemic.

They have painted new markings on the paths along Chesterfield Avenue, to help people visualise what two metres of separation looks like.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) pioneered the idea at the Phoenix Park and St Stephen's Green.

Since then, they have been taking calls from local councils.

Park superintendent Paul McDonnell explains: "It was just something that I saw with my wife and I was like 'that might work'.

"So I've actually had other local authorities being in contact with us, and it's amazing how it just gets out very quick.

"[It's a] small, inexpensive type of way of doing it.

"People are walking along and they go 'Oh, that's actually two metres - we need to step back'.

"So that's kind of the way we were looking at it."

"We'll see how it goes; we might see them up and down O'Connell Street or Grafton Street - you never know".

There has also been a surge in people using public parks since coffee shops, gyms, bars and restaurants shut down.

The Phoenix Park is the largest enclosed public park in any capital city in Europe.

It was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s and opened to the public in 1747.

A large herd of fallow deer still remain to this day.

The park is also home to the Zoological Gardens, Áras an Uachtaráin and Victorian flower gardens.

The park itself remains open - but following public health advice the visitor centre and playground there have been closed to the public until March 29th.

The Phoenix Park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week all year round.
