An Post has issued a new stamp in tribute to Ireland’s changeable weather.
The postal service said the ‘Stamp for Ireland’ celebrates Irish Identity through a "fun depiction of the Irish weather we all know and love.”
The design features the mix of blues and greens that often typify the Irish landscape, with metallic silver raindrops pelting down from above.
On closer inspection, the ‘drops’ are seen to be some of Ireland’s many everyday names for the rain – from pelting, bucketing and báisteach to the lesser known ‘raining stair rods.’
The stamp was created and designed by Irish twins Garech and Declan Stone – who are currently based in Amsterdam.
In a statement they said rainfall is one of the things Ireland is most famous for.
“Without it, there would be no lush green fields, and wonderful crops, meat and dairy,” they said.
“Besides, rain is one of the defining characteristics of Irish identity and dominates much of social discourse.”
An Post Commercial Marketing Director, Fiona Heffernan said the stamp will appeal to the Irish public “as a reflection of themselves” but is also aimed at “visitors to Ireland who expect and anticipate rain as an essential part of their visit.”
