Mr Fry's personal assistant confirmed that the news was correct.
She described it as a private matter, but issued a brief statement on his behalf.
It said: "Stephen Fry is very happy and proud to say that he has set the wheels in motion for a wedding sometime in the future but no date has been set due to a busy work schedule."
Mr Fry has been open about his battle with depression and suicide attempts, which he has written about in his autobiographies and for television.
A friend of the comedian told The Sun: "Since Stephen met Elliott is it like he has a new lust for life."
He recently starred in The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies and has a number of other film projects in the pipeline.
