Storm Darragh has left 395,000 homes, farms and businesses without power, according to the ESB.
The ESB has said it is currently assessing damage to the network and will publish estimated restoration times as soon as possible.
The storm swept across the country overnight with winds of up to 140 kilometres per hour, with Galway being particularly badly affected.
An orange level wind alert remains in place across the country until 10am today.
The public are advised to stay indoors for the next few hours and avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary.
There are reports of fallen trees and debris on many roads and motorists are advised to travel with caution this morning.
A number of flight cancellations have been announced at Dublin Airport and travellers are advised to check with their airlines before travelling.
Irish Rail says there may be some delays and they'll be posting details on their social media.
