Nurses from the emergency department at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin have agreed to defer industrial action planned for next week.
It follows agreement between management and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) at the Labour Relations Commission.
This will see increased staff levels in the department on both days and nights.
Beaumont Hospital will also continue efforts to secure community beds to address the problem of "bed blockers" and overcrowding.
INMO industrial relations officer, Lorraine Monaghan, says it is a "positive outcome". But she is warning the hospital to uphold its side of the deal.
