One Dublin Business School (DBS) student said they've been left in a 'horrendous situation', after the college pulled plans for accreditation of its social care courses.

It withdrew its application to CORU - the Council for Health and Social Care Professionals - for accreditation.

This means their degree would not be enough to qualify them for registration as social care workers.

They've called on Higher Education Minister Simon Harris to step in and help.

Carmel has just completed her second year in the BA course.

She told Lunchtime Live the college kept this quiet for months.

"They had serious faults with their application - so it wasn't a matter of a couple of tweaks to be done for the course.

"They withdrew it in May and they informed us on the 8th of August.

"A horrendous situation to be in, and to be kept in the dark about it.

"I think there was a hidden agenda why they kept it so late to inform us, cause you've first-year students that will be coming in and not be able to re-apply to another college.

"It's shocking - we're all so stressed, we just don't know what's going to happen", she added.

'The degree is useless'

Luke is going in to his fourth year, and has been studying part-time.

He said: "I've completed the three years and paid nearly €12,000.

"I've done the work placement... I've been living at home, thinking I'd be able to make something of myself with this.

"I'm doing part-time.... I couldn't afford to do it full-time, because I have to pay for it myself.

"I was kind of working for it and everything as well."

Luke said the college is not offering any solutions.

"The college don't seem like they're really bothered trying help us out, or trying to find out any solutions or anything like that.

"I think we're all in a lot of the same boat.

"You have a degree, but the degree is useless - it's basically like having a piece of paper to say that you have a degree, but you can't do anything with it".

And Kim has been studying the degree since 2019, but said things got 'sloppy' recently.

"The degree was sold to me under the pretence of 'Do not be worrying about getting CORU registered - this course has been designed around CORU proficiency'.

"It did move smoothly on to Zoom classes over the pandemic - that was fine.

"Third year came up and for me, I was annoyed in third year.

"The course felt very sloppy, there was lecturers not showing up for three weeks.

"There was lecturer who thought we were level 8 [and] graded our exams wrong.

"I had complained about this."

She said her options now are limited: "I tried to get into another college, and because I was missing 10 credits they said no.

"I rang around other colleges as well, they can't take direct entry - we can't get in anywhere else".
