UCD students have made a last ditch attempt to stop the 145 bus service from being scrapped.

The bus runs from Ballywaltrim to Heuston Station, serving Bray, Cabinteely, Donnybrook and the City Centre.

The 145 service is due to cease this coming weekend.

UCD Students Union has launched a petition calling for the bus route to be retained as it is the only public transport route that connects the university to Heuston Station.

Over 1,000 people have signed the petition.

The removal of the 145 bus route is part of the BusConnects Network redesign from Dublin Bus.

'Big concern'

UCD Students Union Campaign and Engagements Officer Saskia McCormack Eiffe said the union welcomes the BusConnects project - but said the 145 should be saved.

"The fact that there is now going to be no bus route from Heuston Station [to UCD] is a big concern," she said.

"We've had students emailing us saying they're already commuting two or three hours on the train and this is just going to add an extra step to their journey.

"Without the 145, it means people are either going to have to swap onto the Luas or get the C Spine which means they're adding on another connection to their journeys into campus every single day."

The 145 is not the only bus service that will cease operating this weekend - the 46a, 46e, 63, 63a, 84, 84a, 84x, 143, 144, 155, 184 and 185 will also stop.

The incoming BusConnects phases will introduce two new 24-hour services - the E1 and E2.

It will also see the radial launch of Route 19, local routes L1, L2, L3, L12, L14, L15, L26, L27 and peak routes X1 and X2.

The areas served by the latest BusConnects phase include Santry, Ballymun, DCU, Dublin Airport, Clontarf, Phibsborough, Broombridge, City Centre, Heuston Station, Stillorgan, UCD, Bray, Dún Laoghaire, Greystones and Newcastle.
