A Status Yellow snow and ice warning will remain in place around the country until 11am this morning.
Met Éireann said wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow are expected with localized accumulations, especially on high ground.
The forecaster said there will be some icy stretches on roads and footpaths.
TODAY
For much of the country, a dry and clear start today.
In the southwest it'll start rather cloudy with showery rain along with a few showers in the north.
Showers are expected to become more widespread through the afternoon with some of the showers wintry again.
Highest temperatures will range from 3C in the north to 7C in the south. Temperatures will be lower in any areas with lying snow.
Winds will stay light in most areas but it will become windy in the southwest with westerly gales possibly along the coast later.
TONIGHT
The winds will be light in the north and strong in the south tonight, becoming moderate to fresh westerly everywhere as the night goes on.
There'll be further rain or showers in the north and northwest, once again turning wintry. The rest of the country will be mostly dry.
Lowest temperatures will range between zero and -4C with a sharp to severe frost and ice on untreated surfaces.
