France is still coming to terms with the shootings in Charlie Hebdo’s offices last week.

Yesterday saw news-stands in France run out of copies of the magazine - the first to be published since its Paris offices were targeted in last week’s terrorist attack.

Closer to home, a retired Supreme Court judge has said Ireland needs to heed events in France.

Justice Catherine McGuinness spoke to Jonathan Healy today about what we can learn from the incidents in Paris, stating: "The situation where those who are asylum seekers are left for years hanging off, not knowing what the situation is going to be and living in this direct provision system, which I think most people agree is very unsatisfactory."

"If you bring up people like that, when they get older they may become very angry and challenging. This is where the people that carried out the terrorist activities in Paris came from."

"While it's a much smaller problem here because there aren't really huge numbers of people involved in the asylum seeking situation, nevertheless, we're a small country and I think we should look at this."

On the blasphemy law, Justice McGuinness stated: "I really would prefer to see a referendum to remove the blasphemy aspect in the constitution and then get rid of that law. I don't think it serves any useful purpose.
