A new survey reveals men drive faster then women and they are more likely to risk drink-driving.

The study from AA Ireland shows that men are more likely to exceed the speed limit by at least 10% while 71% of women say they would refrain from drink driving.

This is compared to 59% of men.

Male respondents who have had a near miss or collision as a result of looking at something while driving were most likely to be distracted by an attractive female pedestrian or cyclist.

Whereas women are most distracted by outdoor advertising and road traffic collisions as well as other cars stopped by Gardaí.

New cameras to be rolled out

Meanwhile the on-going drive to save lives on Irish roads is set to enter a new phase.

It is reported today that preparations are being made for speed cameras to be further rolled out along stretches of roads which have seen serious and fatal collisions.

According to the Irish Independent signs will be put up along the side of the affected routes warning drivers that they are on camera.

It says the decision to target new routes with the cameras came after 2012 set a new historic low for road deaths.

161 people lost their lives on our roads in 2012 which is down from 186 in 2011.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) said safety cameras were a key factor in the 40% reduction in pedestrian deaths.
