Susan Sarandon has urged Irish voters to re-elect Mick Wallace and Clare Daly as MEPs.
The American actress claimed the pair are “speaking up loud and clear for international solidarity” in the European Parliament.
“I can’t tell you how much that means to those of us in other places that are given hope by them,” she said.
“There are very few voices for peace in places of power and we need them more than ever now, especially with what’s going on in Gaza.”
Ms Daly, who represents Dublin, said she was “humbled” by Ms Sarandon’s endorsement.
“It shows the importance of keeping this seat and redoubling our efforts,” she said.
“Susan is a legend. A great actress and an even better person.”
Mr Wallace said he was also pleased to receive Ms Sarandon’s support.
“I don't actually look at too many films myself, but obviously she is a famous actress and people around the world listen to her and respect her,” he said.
“She has a pretty good heart.”
Foreign policy
The pair have courted controversy since their election as MEPs in 2019 with their stances on international issues.
Both condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 but Mr Wallace said that, “In my opinion Ukraine is being used by the US and Nato in their war to undermine Russia.”
Ms Daly also said that the EU’s response to the conflict “makes me sick to be honest with you”.
Fine Gael Senator Barry Ward called for the pair to resign as MEPs.
“I think both she [Clare Daly] and Mick [Wallace] should resign,” Senator Ward told Newstalk.
“Both Clare Daly and Mick Wallace have been propagating a line of narrative in relation to what’s happening in Ukraine that we know is false.
“It contradicts all of the international evidence from disinterested parties, international NGOs, Government parties, media - everybody on the ground is contradicting the Russian narrative and they continue to propagate it.”
Polling for the European election will take place on June 7th.
