The leader of Syria's political opposition has resigned this afternoon. 

His decision to step down from the National Coalition comes after a meeting with EU officials last night. 

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib said he has resigned so that he can work more freely without the constraints of an official organisation.
