Paul Murphy TD has said the victory of the Left wing, anti-austerity party Syriza in the Greek General Election is “a breath of fresh air for working people, the 99 per cent all across Europe.”
Mr Murphy, Anti Austerity Alliance TD for Dublin South West, was in Athens for the announcement of the victory last night and today said the win proves there is an alternative to austerity.
“The idea that there is no alternative has now been smashed by the Greek voters,” he said.
“I think it will give us an impetus to those of us on the Left in Ireland [and] across Europe to try and build a very different sort of Europe,” he added.
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has congratulated the new Greek Prime Minister, Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras, on his party’s election win.
Mr Kenny says he is looking forward to working with Mr Tsipras on securing stability in Europe.
