Wolfe Tones singer Brian Warfield has said a "systematic ban" on the band's music should be lifted.

He said the attitude around rebel songs needs to change, starting with the national broadcaster RTÉ.

The band has enjoyed buoyant popularity, having played Electric Picnic for two years in a row.

Brian Warfield told Lunchtime Live he'd like to see some changes around rebel songs.

"I think an attitude should be changed in RTÉ for a start, and in other radio stations across Ireland, because it's an important part of our musical heritage," he said.

"They're the people that set up our State, they're the people who fought for our State so I don't think we should be shy in acknowledging their part in the history of our county.

"I think it's despicable in fact that they don't acknowledge that".

'No Late Late Show special'

Warfield said they're not expecting a special show to mark their 60th anniversary.

"There's been a systemic ban on The Wolfe Tones since the Section 31 [broadcasting ban] was brought in," he said.

"The Wolfe Tones are totally banned on RTÉ - we're 60 years together, I don't think a 'Late Late Show' will ever happen for The Wolfe Tones.

"I think there's more chance of us being invited to sing on the Moon than to sing on a 'Late Late Show' special.

"We'll happily wait on that invitation to have a gig up on the Moon".

'Accolade to Ireland's heroes'

Warfield said people who may be unhappy hearing rebel songs need to remember Ireland's past.

"If they're in Ireland they should make their peace with that and acknowledge their culture and acknowledge the fact that we do have heroes just as much as any other country," he said.

"Remember that the unionist people gave accolades to their politicians who divided Ireland.

"[Former Northern Ireland First Minister] Arlene Foster got a damehood - or whatever it is - and [former DUP leader] Jeffrey Donaldson got a knighthood.

"They acknowledged the people that kept Ireland divided and all's were trying to do is give an accolade to our great heroes of Ireland.

"It's important to me and it's important to the Irish people".

Warfield added that The Wolfe Tones have had a "great spread of music - we don't just sing about one side or another".
