Teachers unions say another work stoppage at secondary schools will go ahead next week.
The ASTI and TUI held further talks on the issue of junior cert reform with Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan today.
Ms O'Sullivan claims there is "no basis" for secondary teachers to go ahead with next week's one day strike.
The TUI and ASTI have confirmed they'll go ahead with the action next Thursday, January 22nd.
She wants teachers to assess 40 per cent the work of their own students, however the unions say there is still 'considerable distance' between both sides.
Secondary teachers will hold a second strike on the issue next Thursday, January 22nd.
A joint statement from the two unions said:
“It was stated that teachers support a first class Junior Cycle for all students, including a move away from a reliance on final written examinations and the promotion of different types of assessment, including more practical, project and portfolio work.
“Regrettably, there remains a considerable difference between the two respective positions.
“However, we remain resolute in our opposition to significant elements of the proposals, a position overwhelmingly supported by 27,000 second level teachers.”
