Management at Tallaght hospital in Dublin is insisting the facility is managing its finances prudently.

That is despite revelations that it has applied for a €12 million bank overdraft to see it through to the end of the year.

The news comes after the Health Service Executive (HSE) announced that its budget overspend climbed to €374 million at the end of September.

Last night the HSE revealed the scale of the overspend in the health service.

Its budget overrun climbed to €374 million at the end of September compared with €329 million at the end of August.

The crisis was compounded by news that Tallaght Hospital has had to apply for a bank overdraft of €12 million to see it through to the end of 2012.

The news is expected to put the Health Minister James Reilly and his government colleagues under further pressure after they promised to reign in the budget overrun before the end of the year.

It now looks unlikely that will happen meaning other departments who are underspending will have to pick up the tab.

The Chief Executive of Tallaght Hospital says patient care should not be affected by the decision.

Eilish Hardiman spoke to Breakfast here on Newstalk.
