The Tánaiste says the new abortion legislation will go through the Dail without a vote if those opposed to the Bill do not call for one.

Eamon Gilmore says it is not up to the government to decide if TDs will have to vote on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill, it is up to those who are against it.

The prospect of there being no vote on the legislation was raised in recent weeks if Fianna Fail supports it.

While Fianna Fáil leader Michael Martin said last night he will give a free vote on the forthcoming legislation because he did not want to lose people from the party.

The Parliamentary Party decided to allow TDs and Senators vote with their conscience after it became apparent yesterday that an imposed whip on a vote either way would see walkouts from the party.

Mr. Martin told Newstalk he had no choice but to go with a free vote.

10 TDs are needed to specifically demand a vote. This morning Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore says the government is obviously going to agree to the legislation.
