The Tánaiste will visit Uganda and Kenya over the coming days to witness directly how Irish aid has helped lift some of the poorest communities out of hardship.
It is estimated Ireland has contributed to a 50% decrease in the number of people surviving on less than €1 a day there.
The visit by Eamon Gilmore to Kenya is primarily focused on increasing trade and investment opportunities for Irish companies in sectors like telecoms and medical supplies.
The Trade and Foreign Affairs Minister says Uganda is experiencing strong economic growth and Kenya serves as a crucial gateway to East Africa.
