The Tánaiste has said that Hungary's ban on LGBTQIA+ marches is a breach of the EU's fundamental values.

Hungarian lawmakers passed a bill this week banning pride marches by the gay community in the latest row back of rights for LGBTQIA+ people in the country.

Tánaiste Simon Harris said it is something he will be raising with the Hungarian Foreign Minister.

“We should never, ever take for granted the progress that we've made in certain issues and I do believe there's a rolling back in certain countries of that, there is no doubt,” he said.

“Ireland should continue, even at this turbulent time, in fact even more so at this turbulent time, to speak up and speak out in defence of our values.

“I'm alarmed that the Hungarian parliament has passed legislation which further restricts the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary.

“The EU is founded on fundamental values and that action is not compatible with European fundamental values.”
