The Tanaiste says Fine Gael and Labour TDs will be expected to vote with the government on abortion legislation.
It comes after the Church of Ireland Gazette joined calls by the Catholic Church for TDs to be allowed to vote how they want on the issue.
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has ruled out a free vote for TDs and speaking this morning he said he has already dealt with the issue.
Disagrees with Papal comments
The Tanaiste and Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said yesterday he disagreed with the position of the Pope who said he is dismayed at moves to change legislation on abortion here.
Pope Benedict XVI said he noted with dismay that in various countries efforts are being made to introduce or expand legislation which decriminalises abortion.
His comments came during a speech to the diplomatic corp in the Vatican on Monday.
The Pope said "I must note with dismay that, in various countries, even those of Christian tradition, efforts are being made to introduce or expand legislation which decriminalizes abortion".
Speaking this morning Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore says government TDs will be expected to support the legislation.
