The Tanaiste and Labour leader Eamonn Gilmore says he disagrees with the position of the Pope who said he is dismayed at moves to change legislation on abortion here.

Pope Benedict XVI said he noted with dismay that in various countries efforts are being made to introduce or expand legislation which decriminalises abortion.

His comments came during a speech to the diplomatic corp in the Vatican yesterday.

The Pope said "I must note with dismay that, in various countries, even those of Christian tradition, efforts are being made to introduce or expand legislation which decriminalizes abortion".

"Direct abortion, that is to say willed as an end or as a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law".

"In affirming this, the Catholic Church is not lacking in understanding and mercy, also towards the mother involved. Rather, it is a question of being vigilant lest the law unjustly alter the balance between the right to life of the mother and that of the unborn child, a right belonging equally to both" he added.

Expressing 'well-known view'

Although he did not mention Ireland directly observers say there is little doubt the current abortion debate here was high in his thoughts when he made the remarks.

Eamon Gilmore said what the Pope was expressing was the well-known view of his Church.

However he disagreed with that view.

The Tanaiste was speaking at an event in Dublin in relation to the Irish Presidency of the EU.

Mr. Gilmore said that Irish and EU priorities are not that dissimilar.
