The Taoiseach says nothing could be further from the truth that there will be a "wall of reposessions" as a result of government plans to deal with the mortgage arrears crisis.

It's understood banks may be given quarterly targets for dealing with struggling homeowners after the Minister for Finance expressed his dissatisfaction with the speed at which the banks are dealing with arrears.

The Tanaiste says it is time to see lenders engaging with householders to resolve the mortgage arrears crisis.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan will announce tomorrow a plan devised with the Central Bank on how to deal on a quarterly basis with the 100,000 people who have a mortgage in severe distress.

However the rate of increase in arrears is beginning to slow.

Enda Kenny's told the Dáil that reposession will not be even examined for most people:

The Communications Minister said last week that banks are not interested in repossessing houses from customers who are in arrears with their mortgages. Pat Rabbitte was responding to comments from the SIPTU General-President Jack O'Connor.

He described renewed talk of evictions as 'reprehensible and barbaric'.

But Minister Rabbitte said yesterday there has been no increase in the number of evictions and that we should wait to see the results of the Personal Insolvency Bill.
