The Taoiseach was told to "stop behaving like a child” by the Ceann Comhairle in a testy exchange in Dáil Éireann.

At Leaders' Questions this afternoon, Labour’s Alan Kelly asked Micheál Martin a question about the Garda vetting for new recruits at Templemore.

Mr Martin replied that he would “engage” with the Minister for Justice and get him to respond to the Tipperary North TD.

When the Ceann Comhairle asked him to resume his seat, Mr Martin continued to talk and Verona Murphy eventually told him, “Taoiseach, please stop behaving like a child.”

Her remarks were greeted with a roar of approval from opposition TDs but there were mutterings of disquiet from Government benches.

“It’s not out of order,” Deputy Murphy said before ringing her bell.

“When I hit the bell, I ask you to resume your seat when your time is up.”

The Taoiseach can be heard talking to which the Ceann Comhairle replied, “I haven’t yet but what we seem to have this morning is a playground.

“So, I’d ask everybody to conform and have respect for the members whose time you’re taking up.”

Social Democrats TD Sinéad Gibney then asked the Taoiseach about the multinational sector.
