The Taoiseach has said he will not be calling for a debt conference.

Enda Kenny says he won't support any such event, despite the prospect of a similar move for Greece.

Greece will hold an election this Sunday, with the most popular party campaigning for a conference to discuss writing off some of its debts.

But the Taoiseach today told told the Dáil this afternoon that he won't call for a similar conference for Ireland.

In reply to a query from Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, Mr Kenny bluntly replied ‘no’, when asked if he would call for a debt conference. The Taoiseach said he doesn't want to hold talks with Ireland's creditors about writing off some of its debts, or interfere in electoral matters in another EU member state.

“Ireland’s position is very different from Greece,” he said.

“Because of negotiations between the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform and the Troika has resulted in Ireland being in a very different place to Greece,” he added.
