Teachers and school staff in the U.S. state of South Dakota are to be given the right to carry guns in order to protect schoolchildren.

The law is the first of its kind following the school shooting in Newtown in Connecticut where 26 people died.

It move means each school district can choose if staff could be armed and will come into effect in July.
