A teenage boy has died after being hit by a car in Claremorris, Co Mayo, overnight. 

It happened on the N17 at Barnacarroll, Claremorris, Co Mayo, at approximately 9.20pm.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Mayo University Hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

The road is currently closed for forensic examination. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí in Mayo are appealing for witnesses. 

They are particularly interested in anyone with dashcam footage who was driving in the area at the time.

The tragic death brings to 57 the number of people to have died on the roads this year.
