The girl has been named locally as Zara Murphy, who is the daughter of Irish Soccer Referees Society (ISRS) Louth Branch secretary Brian Murphy.

The North East Football League has cancelled all matches this weekend, including all ladies’ fixtures, as a mark of respect.

The league offered its thoughts and prayers to Zara’s parents, brother, grandparents and extended family and friends.

In a statement, Gardaí said they were notified of the incident.

Gardaí are treating the death as a medical incident and no foul play is suspected.
