The whole of Ireland will be under a Status Yellow weather warning until Friday, Met Éireann has said.
According to the forecaster, very cold nights with widespread frost, ice and lying snow can be expected.
“Bitterly cold conditions are expected right away across the country,” The Weather Station’s Cathal Nolan said.
“However, there will be some wintry showers along northern and north-western areas.
“A few will drift into Atlantic coastal counties in the south-west as well but, overall, it’s a dry, cold picture.”
Motorists are being warned about hazardous driving conditions and temperatures could drop well below freezing.
“The days are likely to be bright, dry days but very cold,” Mr Nolan said.
“Temperatures hardly rising above freezing and in some areas not getting higher than -3, -4°C to as low as -10, maybe even -12 in some areas.”
Next week, Met Éireann has forecast temperatures “slightly higher than average for mid-January”.
