Temperatures dipped to more than -6C last night as forecasters claim there is a possibility of a further final weather warning.

Met Éireann have said that Roscommon was the coldest part of the country overnight with temperatures dipping to -6.5C in Mountdillon.

As a Status Orange low temperature and ice warning comes to an end for 15 countries, Ireland reverts to a Status Yellow warning until midday today.

There are fears of a further freeze tonight, but it does look like the cold snap will be coming to an end, with temperatures slowly starting to rise from today.

By Sunday, the thermometer is expected to hit highs of 10C.

Risk of thawing and re-freezing

On Newstalk Breakfast, Met Éireann Meteorologist Brandon Creagh there is a possible risk that comes with thawing and re-freezing.

“Possibly the biggest risk as we head into this evening and overnight is when all the snow and ice that was around… once that melts and then refreezes tonight, as we get back down to freezing overnight, that could cause quite a problem for people,” he said.

“So still staying dangerous tonight on the roads, but once we get into tomorrow, Saturday, we'll have a proper thaw, and everything will be back to kind of South-westerly breezes, milder conditions than we've seen for past week.”

Mr Creagh said there is a possibility for a further warning later today as temperatures are set to dip to minus numbers again tonight.

“At the moment, we have the Status Orange elapsing and then the Status Yellow low temperature warning is elapsing at midday today,” he said.

“After that, we have no warnings in effect but do keep up to date with Met Éireann as with that ice possible again tonight, that could be just the last of a warning issued later today, but after that, it should be all clear.”

Perilous conditions

Conditions are still perilous in some areas of the country, despite the Status Orange warning elapsing.

“[Areas] in the North Midlands and Northwest inland counties are still staying quite cold up till midday today, or possibly even a few hours later in any areas that kind of persist with the lying snow and ice,” Mr Creagh said.

Temperatures are set to rise to between 5C and 10C over the weekend.
