The organiser of a controversial American-style child beauty pageant is hitting back criticism that competitions like hers sexualise children, as it prepares to stage their first-ever show in Ireland this September.
Texas-based "Universal Royal Beauty Pageant" will run a glitzy 20-thousand euro event for both girls and boys which will see babies, toddlers and teens compete against one another, including a heat with youngsters decked out in swimwear.
Applications welcome
The woman behind the event says she hopes lots of parents will contact her to apply.
Texan business-woman Annette Hill told Newstalk's Breakfast she's very excited to be travelling here in September, and she's hoping for some good weather, as inclement weather puts people off.
Hill says her company, Universal Royalty, only started promoting their Irish event in the last few day, but she describes demand as 'good'.
Swimwear & tanning
According to the pageant organiser, the swimsuit event in particular is attracting interest - she insists that event is judged on the basis of personality first and foremost.
Annette Hill says children who are competing are not required to wear make-up or to tan, but they would expect to see teenagers groomed in that manner in the older categories. However, she added that a small amount of make-up to enhance a child's appearance under strong lights would be welcome.
Hill is hoping someone who would like to be an Irish judge will put themselves forward to judge the American panel.
Annette Hill, the head of the Universal Royal Beauty Pageant based in Texas, says if anyone who thinks the competition sexualises children should stay away:
