A Thai woman has been sentenced to 9 years in jail by an Australian court after becoming the first person there convicted of trafficking a child for prostitution.
The 41-year-old woman who cannot be named pleaded guilty to trafficking in the Supreme Court in Brisbane. She also pleaded guilty to procuring the prostitution of her daughter and 14 counts of indecent treatment of a child.
The offences happened in Australia and began in 2004 when the girl was aged 9. The court was told they continued for a 7-year period.
The Judge described the case as "shocking" and sentenced the woman to 9 years in jail. It also ordered that she serve 4 years before being eligible for parole, according to ABC.
Child trafficking in Australia carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
