The 2 Johnnies say they felt 'eventually their time was going to come' on 2fm.
The comedians left their drivetime RTÉ radio show last month after two years.
This was followed by a larger exodus of fellow presenters Doireann Garrihy and Jennifer Zamparelli.
The developments led to speculation around the future and viability of the station.
Johnny Smacks and Johnny B, known collectively as The 2 Johnnies, told The Hard Shoulder radio takes a lot of effort.
"People I think are looking for some great mystery but we'd been working seven days a week for ages," Johnny said.
"We went into the radio and absolutely horsed into it.
"Every day before we went on we felt like we were getting ready to play a match".
'Starting to cut corners'
The 2 Johnnies said something had to give.
"We were just starting to cut corners with everything," Johnny said.
"With the podcast I wasn't as prepped going into it as I'd like; we've got a Patreon podcast that's a huge part of our world as well.
"In our personal lives it felt like nobody was getting our full attention".
Johnny said they knew the 2fm show wouldn't last indefinitely.
"In radio - you know yourself - no show lasts forever," he said.
"There isn't too many Pat Kenny's and Gay Byrne's anymore like.
"So I think eventually our time was going to come and we said we'd get out while we were still making a good show".
Johnny said he believes the exodus after them was a coincidence.
"There's no big conspiracy theory around it," he said.
"It just was coincidence that everyone else left at the same time as us."
Leaving the door open, he added: "There's always a possibility of us going back on radio".
The 2 Johnnies have released their debut album, 'Small Town Heroes', and are on tour this summer.
