There are some annoyances that may be as old as time - rude people, for one - but there are some that are products of a much more recent time. And it looks like what is new is also sometimes very, very stressful. A new survey has found that many of the most stressful moments in modern life are driven by technology.
Nurofen Express have conducted a survey of 2000 people, asking them what the 50 most annoying things about modern life are. They wanted to know what triggers the stress and anger of daily life. And the minutia of daily life dominates – with technological problems, bad manners and traffic related bugbears all scoring big.
Top of the list, maybe surprisingly, is a computer or laptop crashing. Now, this a obviously a traumatic, pulse accelerating experience - especially if you lose four spreadsheets, a half completed online survey and a five times revised unpublished Facebook status update in the implosion – but it seems odd that it ranks so far above, say, buying property, which doesn’t come in until 18.
Reboot the laptop from the couch or get into a bidding war with a cash buyer for that 2 bed semi-d? But this is science, so we won’t, nay can’t, argue.
Similarly, slow Wi-Fi ranks a full nine spots above stepping in dog poo. A matter of personal preference, perhaps.
The survey also found that stress can physically affect a lot of us, with over one third of respondents saying they felt ill when stress got on top of them.
And life is getting more stressful, or at least we think it is. With technology so present in the list, it seems the devices sold to us as making life easier, are in fact making it much tougher.
A spokesman for Nurofen Express said: "Despite technology being designed to make our lives easier, 55 per cent of those surveyed feel that life is more stressful now than it was ten years ago.
"It seems the things that are supposed to be solutions, or speed our life up, can prove an inconvenience and a great source of frustration.
"It's interesting to note that the biggest factors in the rise of our stress levels include increased living costs, heightened pressure at work and pressures from society."
Many of those who listed their annoyances admitted they have seriously considered quitting their job because of stress.
The Nurofen Express spokesman added: "Often these annoyances are out of our hands but the signs of stress and tension they can cause in us can build and end up having a big impact on our health."
And we are well aware that some of you, beleaguered by years online perhaps, might want to add internet lists to this internet list. But resist that temptation, the stress is no good for you.
